What is language development?

We can think of the process of language development like water running down a slope. If the environment is right, the water will flow freely, finding its own path down the slope. If there are obstacles in its path, it will take a little longer to make the journey.
With a few key principles in mind, and some practice, we can make the language environment around them rich in learning opportunities, and so allow their language to grow into sophisticated language skills.

By paying attention together to what interests and frustrates each individual, we can find out where they are on their learning ladder, and so offer them the next rung.
